01 — Spread
Wings all the way forward.
Forward wing settings are used for takeoff and landing. Extended, the B-1B spans 137 feet and can launch at a maximum takeoff weight of 477,000 pounds.
02 — Sweep
Then it folds itself back.
The wings sweep aft for high-subsonic and supersonic flight, reducing the span to 79 feet while the same airframe changes shape in motion.
03 — Burner
Faster than the noise.
Four General Electric F101 engines light their afterburners as the Lancer accelerates toward Mach 1.2.
04 — Descent
Wings out for the approach.
The sweep returns forward, speed comes off, and the section roads of West Texas rise through the haze on the way back to Dyess.
05 — Runway 16
